With all of the new trends popping up, it’s hard to keep up with them. However, there are some trends that will never go away—say, flashy shoes. Granite Park’s students, teachers and other adults talk about the trends below:

Q: How much do you value your shoes?

A: “None! Other countries don’t have enough resources to have shoes.” -Dillon Ard, Granite Park eighth grader

“A bit, but they end up getting ruined by the next month.” -Daven Christensen, Granite Park eighth grader

“I value them a lot. They protect your feet and they help you do what you do on a daily basis.” -Ken Dilley, Spanish teacher and Physical Education teacher

“Since I’m on my feet all day, I value them with great regard.” -Bill Burgett, my father

: Why do you think shoes are important for an outfit?

A: “Well, if you’re wearing no shoes or weird shoes, people will question them. Like, ‘what are those!?’ will be a legitimate insult.” -Ruby Pacheco, Granite Park eighth grader

“They’re very important for an outfit. If you’re all dressed up and you’re wearing ratty shoes, it just stands out.” -Dilley

“The proper shoes with the same-colored belt—it completes the look.” -Burgett

Q: How much money was your most expensive pair of shoes?

A: “I paid fifteen dollars.” -Stephanie Taylor, Granite Park eighth grader

“Probably around 175 dollars.” -Burgett

“My good shoes are around 100 dollars.” -Dilley “Thirty dollars, probably.” -Christensen

Q: Why are shoes often judged by other people?

A: “It really doesn’t happen often in my classes. If someone is wearing really nice shoes, people will give positive comments toward them.” -Dilley

“They’re often judged because it’s today’s society. It’s just modern fashion.” -Burgett

Q: Are shoes judged like clothes are?

A: “Oh heck no! Shoes are judged way more than clothes are.” -Taylor

Before reading the next question, I’d like to explain that people were put on the spot when I asked this. Therefore, a majority of people would say “treats” because they wouldn’t want to be thought of as rude or insensitive.

Q: What’s more important to you—how someone looks or how someone treats you?

A: “Treats. Maybe some popular kids would say ‘it’s the way they look’ or ‘it’s the way they dress’.”

“Treats!” -Ard and Skyler Garcia, Granite Park eighth grader

Q: What is your favorite brand of shoes?

A: “*lifts shoe on table* Converse.” -Taylor and Brevana Pascasio, Granite Park eighth grader

“*lifts shoe on table* Adidas.” -Christensen

“I’ve had the best experience with Nike over the years.” -Burgett

It became obvious to me that not a lot of people obsess over shoes. I can agree that there are some shoe fanatics that think shoes are one of the most important things in their world, but overall, Granite Park Jr. is okay.

Now I have to figure out why someone wears very clean and expensive shoes while also wearing unclean and/or worn out clothes. The world may never know the answer to that question.
