S.A.G.E is finally here again and behind all of the pained groans of kids who didn’t pay attention to their classes all year are also the numerous tips and tricks people always talk about and throw around. One of those tips that I’ve seen mentioned every time and every year without fail is ¨Eat a Healthy Breakfast¨. But is breakfast as important as our teachers and parents claim it to be? The short answer would be, ¨yes, yes it is,¨ but this wouldn’t be a full article if we didn’t list all of the reasons for why that is.

First there is the health factor of it all.According to a United Kingdom study done on 4,116 primary school kids(9-10 years old) it was found that children who ate breakfast regularly, more favorably a high fiber cereal, had a less chance to get Type 2 Diabetes than those who did not.

Another reason why it would be a smart idea to eat before school/during den is that children who eat breakfast have been proven to having a higher IQ than those who have not. According to the article ¨How Eating Breakfast Makes Your Child Smarter¨ by Joan Salge Blake, breakfast improves cognitive performance in a student which would mainly have to do with increasing memory  and attention span in class. She also mentions a study done on Chinese kindergarteners that found that kids who ate breakfast regularly had a higher IQ than the ones who didn’t, and that the difference was still there after taking in other things that can affect IQ, such as parents occupation or education.

¨It is good for students to eat breakfast because it helps their mind to focus more during the day.¨ Said Granite Park seventh grader Mariah Valle.

Meanwhile,other students disagreed.

¨I think that breakfast is a waste of time because it takes up my morning time.¨ Said seventh grader Natalia Reisanaenone.

One main reason why people would want to skip breakfast is that people are trying to lose weight and think that if they skip they won’t take in the extra calories, but that can actually be proven wrong. An article by WebMD.com says that skipping breakfast, while it may give a person a few less calories, it will also slow down his or her metabolism which can actually end with them gaining more than they lose. The researchers in Physiology & Behavior journal at Cornell University in 2013, found that college students who skipped breakfast ate 145 more calories at lunch when they had nothing for breakfast rather than when they ate breakfast.

Based on these findings, Skipping breakfast provides provides with no benefits, and if students don’t eat breakfast, then they could end up drowsy and unfocused while taking the SAGE test.If the problem with breakfast is that school food is gross than find maybe Five to 10 minutes to eat at home before school. Even a simple apple is better than no breakfast at all.

I think that eating an awesome breakfast is fabulous. if I don´t drink coffee at least I get very hungry, so in that case I have to take breakfast in den (gross). Also you are supposed to eat a heavy breakfast, a small lunch, and light dinner.

Clearly the school is trying to poison us with this “breakfast.” Why else would a school provide free food to children.
